Harald Zur Hausen was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2008 for his discovery of the Human Papilloma Virus, as being the cause of cervical cancer. Harald zur Hausen and his research team have also been at the forefront of research to demonstrate that HPV is the direct cause of genital cancer and develop targeted vaccines.
